SAVING STEELE by Anne Jolin
Series: Rock Falls Series #5
Genre: Contemporary Romance

– SYNOPSIS –

*Can be read as a standalone or as part of the Rock Falls Series.

Kennedy Cross had her heart broken early in life. It wasn’t someone or something who betrayed her—it was her own body. Despite it being all she’s ever wanted, Kennedy will never know what it feels like to feel her baby’s feet kick from the inside out. Having been pronounced infertile at only eighteen, she redirected her life the best way she could.
Eight years and a degree later, Kennedy is one of the most well-loved first-grade teachers at Rock Falls Elementary School. It doesn’t matter that her college boyfriend left her because he wanted children of his own. She has twenty-two of the most gorgeous six-year-olds who adore her and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Jackson Steele deals only in extremes. He falls victim to manic episodes lasting for days, sometimes weeks at a time, sending him reeling from volatile highs to devastating lows. It’s a living hell just being inside his own mind, and that hell has taken everything he’s ever loved away from him. But what if, this time, it gives him something? An untimely gift from God and a brunette with legs eight miles long will bring him the most unforeseen joy but also his most challenging of tests.

What happens when circumstances of life threaten the one thing both Jackson and Kennedy love? Saving Steele from himself may prove to be too much for Cross to bear.

– ABOUT THE AUTHOR –
ANNE JOLIN
Hey y’all,
I was born and raised in Ladner, a small farm town just outside Vancouver, Canada. I grew up riding horses, shooting guns, and driving in trucks.
I never expected to be an author. A massage therapist? Yes. Take over the family construction company? Yes. But an author? No. Writing was something that snuck up on me and rooted itself into my life. It was beautiful to discover that love, and I’m truly grateful to say I’ve found my passion.
Since I’ve always been a creative person, it feels amazing to harness all of that energy and use it to tell a story I love. I enjoy incorporating bits of my real life into the stories I write. What parts are true? Hah. I’ll never tell—what would be the fun in that?
If I could leave y’all with one thing, it’s that life’s far too short to not live it out loud. Drown in your passions, hold on tight to the things that inspire you, and chase your dreams relentlessly. I can promise you without a doubt that you won’t regret it. I know I don’t.
Mad love,
Anne Jolin

Mirror, mirror … who’s the fairest of them all?

I still cringe when I hear that line. A fairy tale that had girls pretending they were the fairest, the most beautiful, and the most entitled. A fairy tale most couldn’t grow out of turned my haunted childhood memories into a living nightmare. Girls who grew up believing that pile of garbage became the meanest of all ‘mean girls.’

And those mean girls were right – it was a line meant for all the beautiful people in the world – and I knew the answer would never be me.

The women with long legs, flat stomachs, and perfect chests.

The type of women Kane Masters gravitated toward.

Well, that’s definitely not Willow Tate.

No. That will never be me.

Because I’m completely imperfect.

And … I hate myself.

I have no idea what Kane could possibly see in someone like me when he could have them.

perfectly imperfect teaser 2

Excerpt

“Are you nervous right now?”

I nod.

“Tell me why.”  His demand, steady and calm, gives me the courage I need to tell him.  To open a vein and bleed my insecurities.

“I’m not perfect,” I whisper.

“And neither am I, Willow.  I don’t want perfect.  What so many see as perfect, to me, is fake.  Perfect isn’t achievable naturally.  No one, and I mean no one, is perfect.”

I’m shaking my head before he’s even done speaking, but one long finger comes up and presses against my lips before I can speak.

“No, let me finish.  There isn’t beauty in perfection.  It’s as fake as the image the word projects.  Beauty is found in imperfection, Willow, because to admit you’re not perfect means you’re admitting you’re not whole and absolute.  When I think of myself, I see someone willing to admit he’s as far from complete as it gets because, in order to get to that perfection, I need to find the other part of me who will make my life better.  To take all the faults I have and fill them, and only then will I be there.  You see, the way I see it, the only way to become perfect is to find that perfectly imperfect person who brings it out of you.”

When he stops, I swear I might have stopped breathing.  How am I supposed to respond to that?

“Do you trust me?” he asks, his voice strong and sure.

“Yes, Kane.  Nerves or not, I do.”

“Then let me show you what I see when I look at you.”

He brings his hands up, framing my face once again in a way I’m quickly becoming addicted to the feeling of.  His warm eyes implore, begging me without words to let him continue.  I do not intend to stop him, regardless of the butterflies currently taking over my system.  I’m all in.

Excerpt
His gaze softens as he cups the side of my neck. “Jesus, you should never feel insecure. You’re fucking beautiful, Liv, bruises or not. Nothing in the world could ever change that.”
I watch him carefully, his sincerity tearing through my defenses. “You really mean that, don’t you?”
He rears back, the skin between his brows bunching together in deep valleys of confusion. “Of course I do. How could you not know that?”
I shrug. “I don’t know. I guess it’s…” I pause for a moment before deciding to bare it all. “It’s hard for me to believe you still think I’m beautiful despite finding me the way you did.”
Understanding dawns and he quickly shakes his head. “No, not ever. That didn’t change the way I look at you. Yes, it fucking gutted me to see you that way, but not once did I think any less of you.” He pulls me closer while his determined gaze bores into mine. His jaw flexes, the rhythm of his chest growing heavier. “It should have never happened. Nothing so hateful should have ever touched something so beautiful. But make no mistake, Liv, when I look at you, I don’t see the girl I found that day, I see the girl who survived it all. You’re fucking beautiful, inside and out, nothing or no one will ever change that.”
My breath hitches as tears blur my eyes, his words healing my wounded soul. “You make me feel beautiful,” I choke out softly.
“Good, baby, because you are, every inch of you, and don’t ever fucking forget it.” He closes the small space between our mouths, his lips claiming mine in a heated caress as his tongue sweeps in.

About INFLICT (Book 2):

Wilder Bell made a dangerous bargain…

For a chance at love, he gave up his life.

History knew Kalliope as an ancient Greek muse, but to Wilder, she was simply the woman he wanted to fall asleep with every night and wake up next to every morning. He made a deal with Hades, but the only thing the Lord of the Underworld deals in is death. Now Wilder is wasting away in a cold and wretched afterlife, waiting for Kalli to come for him. She will come. He has to believe that. Because the alternative is worse than death.

Kalliope lived her entire existence knowing that she was both a blessing and a curse to anyone she encountered. Wilder was no different. She loved him, and she got him killed. Now to get him back, she’ll have to face a scheming god, a perilous task, and death itself. But before it’s done, the Underworld will take more from her than she ever thought possible.

To be made whole, all must first be lost.

Book Review: Try Not to Breathe by Holly Seddon

Try Not to BreatheTry Not to Breathe by Holly Seddon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Masterfully done. That epilogue was so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes.

I really appreciated the narrative techniques employed here, and how all of the points of view tied together. The suspense element of Try Not to Breathe is on point. Perhaps I should have solved the mystery sooner, but Alex and Amy’s stories were each so compelling that, as opposed to working through my own theories, I immersed myself in the girls’ emotions and experiences instead.

Not that it should be a contest or anything, but I connected more with Alex than I did with Amy. Something about Alex’s story of addiction and loss really resonated with me as a reader. She, more than any other element, is the novel’s crowning achievement: a true-to-life, gritty character who’s pulling herself up from some really dark depths—all through the sense of purpose she feels toward a hospitalized victim. I felt honored to accompany Alex on her mission, both a quest for answers and a journey toward self-discovery.

For those who enjoy a suspenseful read with well-developed characters, someone and something to root for, you owe it to yourself to give this title a look.

Book Review: The Incurables by Jon Bassoff

The IncurablesThe Incurables by Jon Bassoff
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I hardly know what to say about The Incurables. Its implications and complexity strike me as much more far-reaching than something to be read merely for entertainment. It seems like something I’d have read and studied in a literature course, which I mean as the utmost compliment to the author.

And, yet, I did read this for entertainment. I sought out The Incurables on NetGalley because I was in the mood for a dark read—Halloween and all that—and this novel didn’t disappoint. Instead of featuring one main character, this one features none. Or more than one—I can’t decide. Either way, the subject matter is dark and haunting in a “this-could-really-happen” kind of way.

Some fiction is scary because of supernatural effects. On the contrary, the characters and situations in The Incurables are alarming because of their humanity, perhaps the scariest subject matter of all.

On a similar note, historical influences served the novel well. Medical experimentation—specifically the lobotomy—fascinates me, as do TV series and movies featuring the same (American Horror Story: Asylum and Session 9, respectively). If I’m not mistaken, the author actually used the name of an actual American doctor who performed lobotomies to various degrees of success. All of that to say, the research and accuracy of this aspect of the novel were not lost on me. It gave the novel an authentic, true-to-life feel, which made its implications even more alarming.

Thematically, this novel seems to focus on the concept of salvation as obtained either through science or religion…and not well in either case. The main characters overlap in the most curious and satisfying of ways, while the action itself, by the novel’s end, comes full circle.

If delusions, men with a God complex, and toxic family relationships are your bag, you owe it to yourself to check out this novel. Although I don’t read in this genre very often, I do know that The Incurables is horror and suspense done right.

Book Review: The Comfort of Black by Carter Wilson

The Comfort of BlackThe Comfort of Black by Carter Wilson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5-4 stars

Essentially, The Comfort of Black is a story of one woman’s survival. She’s had to navigate a difficult set of circumstances, one of which will hook readers from the very beginning.

The narrative is fast-paced, set up as a process of discovery—on the part of the readers, and from main character Hannah’s perspective as well. The novel’s unpredictable and suspenseful trajectory kept me curious and engaged all the way through, with no lags marring my reading experience.

To explain the slight deduction in stars:
• Hannah kept being referred to as successful, and the reasoning or justification behind that didn’t sit right with me. At that point in the novel, her “success” was tied up in her husband’s wealth. I wanted success for her; I just wanted it to be defined differently.
• At times, the characters felt two-dimensional, which made it difficult for me to connect with them. (Of course, this may be attributed to my own reading preferences. The Comfort of Black is written in third person, while I generally gravitate toward first.)
• In my opinion, a few of the story’s elements lacked development or needed more explanation.

Entertaining, with lots of unexpected twists and turns, The Comfort of Black is deserving of a mystery/suspense audience. I found many phrasings to be particularly masterful; unfortunately, I can’t share for risk of spoiling some major plot points. Nevertheless, concepts like identity, trust, and survival make this novel a page-turner that I’m still thinking about even days afterward.

Book Review: Beneath These Scars by Meghan March

Beneath These Scars (Beneath, #4)Beneath These Scars by Meghan March
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I liked this one a lot!

Perhaps what I like most about the two Meghan March books I’ve read (this one and Beneath These Chains) is how fast-paced they are. As a reader, I was kept on my toes in both cases, and no part of the story felt as if it were dragging.

Lucas Titan is tough character to love, but he did win me over. He kind of reminded me of Mr. Darcy (Pride and Prejudice) in a way: he doesn’t always come off as the best guy (because he can be gruff, abrasive, and arrogant), but the people who know him best hold him in the highest regard.

I’m a sucker for a strong heroine, and Yve certainly exemplifies that. She’s a shrewd businesswoman, and she challenges Lucas at every turn–which is exactly what he needs in a life partner.

Beneath These Scars has a storyline that kept me interested, entertained, and–when all was said and done–made me smile. In addition to the elements already mentioned, I loved the Beauty and the Beast references and Jerome (a secondary character). Readers of romance, this title is definitely one to pick up! (Side note: I think I’ve developed a girl crush on Meghan March.)
