A special note from the author

Dear Readers,

I wrote Race the Darkness from start to finish three different times, with three different story lines, and with three different titles! The only thing that ever remained the same between the versions was Xander and Isleen. I believed in them and the story they wanted to tell. I hope you love reading about their tragedies and triumphs as much as I enjoyed writing them… All three times! And isn’t the cover amazing, beautiful, gorgeous? I cried the first time I saw it! It made all the hard work to get this book to you worth it!

Abbie Roads

An excerpt from Race the Darkness

No fucking way was he going to die running. He stopped, turned and faced the truck barreling toward them. The tires ate up the ground at an indecent rate. He clutched Isleen tighter to his chest. For her sake, he wanted it to be a quick death. No more lingering. No more pain.

That thought infuriated him. None of this was right. They shouldn’t be on the verge of death. Again.

The truck kept coming—twenty-five feet.

Everything slowed, happened as if through the quicksand of time. A white dandelion floaty meandered on the breeze directly between them and the truck. His heart no longer ran a staccato rhythm. Duh…duhm. Pause. Duh…duhm. Pause.

His life didn’t flash before his eyes. The future did. Isleen’s future. In an ethereal dream beyond time, her skin was gilded by firelight, her eyes void of sadness and fear, her body whole and healthy. She smiled, an expression so full of warmth and tenderness and undiluted joy that it plunked itself down inside his heart and wouldn’t leave.

He ached to create that kind of smile on her face, but their lives were over and it all could’ve gone so differently if he’d only listened to her, believed in her, found her years before now.

Book Review: An Unforgivable Love Story by BL Berry

An Unforgivable Love StoryAn Unforgivable Love Story by B.L. Berry
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5+++ stars

Wow.

Wow, wow, wow!

As many others have suggested, it’s best to go in to An Unforgivable Love Story blind. The blurb is short and vague for good reason. I requested this ARC as an opportunity to experience a new-to-me author. As evidenced by my rating and review, I wasn’t disappointed! On the contrary, I’m truly blown away by the author’s talent and the “unforgivable” love story she’s crafted.

Be warned that this isn’t a paint-by-number, predictable romance. Readers’ allegiance and sympathies will be tested. Readers will experience interesting perspectives, and will get a real sense of more than one character: what makes them tick, their virtues and vices, what motivations drive their actions forward.

What you can expect from this read:
An incredibly engaging story.
Brilliant, visceral, emotive writing.
Content that raises complex questions.
Chapter openings that seize you by the collar.
A striking ending that offers closure…as much as it raises even more questions.

I can’t recommend this one enough!

Book Review: Flip This Love by Maggie Wells

Flip This LoveFlip This Love by Maggie Wells

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Flip This Love by Maggie Wells strikes the perfect balance between smart and steamy. Add in two truly likeable main characters, as witty and accomplished as they are outwardly attractive, and we’ve got another winner on our hands from the Coastal Heat series.

In this title, the author masterfully handles inner conflict, delving into the characters’ family dynamics and even pertinent high school experiences. Furthermore, the story itself features my favorite kind of hero—a self-made entrepreneur who works with his hands and who treats his mother like a queen. Harley Cade also pursues the heroine with near-singular focus, at the same time holding her accountable for any unfair or juvenile behavior. Yet even then, he does so with care.

The heroine’s backstory is that of surviving her family’s fall from grace. At the novel’s beginning, the state of Laney Tarrington’s finances, and of her emotional support system, leaves much to be desired. Nevertheless, a strong woman emerges from the debris of her family’s crumbling empire. As a reader, I sympathized with and admired the heroine’s efforts to better her situation on all fronts.

In reading this novel, it became very clear to me that writing is a craft for Maggie Wells—something she makes look easy, ironically due to the care and effort she puts into each element, from word choice to pacing to sentence structure. For anyone with reservations about third person point of view, this author delivers as well as or better than anyone out there. And I say that as a firm proponent of the first-person narrative.

Like the first in the series (Going Deep), etiquette, tradition, wealth and bloodlines, and “saving face” reign supreme in this southern setting. Another pattern I’ve noticed is the way the author makes eating (esp. with one’s hands) a sexy act. In Going Deep, it’s the rib eating scene I’m thinking of; in Flip this Love, it’s crawfish. Both are messy, both undeniably sexy with Wells’ flavor sprinkled in.

All in all, another great read from an author I’m keeping my eye on!

BLURB

It’s said that your life flashes before your eyes when you die.
It must only happen to those whose lives were worthy.
Clearly, mine was not.
The only thing that happened to me was a repeat of what I thought was my death.
The blast of the gun as it went off.
The loss of my breath as two hundred pounds of dead weight dropped on top of me.
And then darkness.
This replayed over and over.
When the guy squatted down next to me and asked if I was hurt, the only thing I could see, feel,
hear, were those few seconds.
Even now, as I sat in the back of a blacked out van—it was the only thing that ran through my mind.
Gunshot, breath, darkness.

Release Blitz and Review for PSU: Season 2 Episode 1 by Kandi Steiner

Title: Palm South University: Season Two Episode One
Author: Kandi Steiner
Release Date: March 8, 2016
Find on Goodreads – http://bit.ly/1Tfdky6

Drama. Lies. Sex.

Welcome to Palm South University.

The weather isn’t the only thing heating up in South Florida. At a school where fraternities and sororities don’t exactly play by the rules, relationships are bound to be tested. Parties and sex are definitely key ingredients in the Palm South recipe, but what happens when family issues, secret lives, and unrequited love get tossed in the mix?

Follow Cassie, Bear, Jess, Skyler, Erin, Ashlei, and Adam as they tackle college at a small, private beach town university. Written in television drama form, each episode of this serial will pull you deeper and deeper into the world of PSU.

Where the sun is hot and the clothes are scarce, anything can happen.

“Kind of presumptuous, don’t you think?” She asks, but her eyes are already undressing me.
“Depends.”
“On?”
I shrug. “On whether you let me take you back to my room or not.”
She stares at the hand I’m now holding out toward her, seemingly debating her options. She could easily walk away, find one of her girlfriends and leave the party without so much as another word. But the way she’s chewing her lip tells me that’s not exactly the plan she has in mind.
“I’m only going back with you on one condition.”
I wait, hand still outstretched as she narrows her eyes.
“I want two orgasms tonight. And not the kind I fake, the kind I can’t hold back with. The kind that make my legs sore in the morning.”
My teeth find my bottom lip, fighting back a smile. Who the hell is this girl and where has she been hiding?
“I’ll give you three.”

Kandi Steiner is a Creative Writing and Advertising/Public Relations graduate from the University of Central Florida living in Tampa with her husband. Kandi works full time as a social media specialist, but also works part time as a Zumba fitness instructor and blackjack dealer.

Kandi started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic (like most girls brought up on Disney movies).

When Kandi isn’t working or writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys beach days, movie marathons, live music, craft beer and sweet wine – not necessarily in that order.

Epilogue Book Blog’s review (by Holly)
FIVE STARS

I didn’t think I’d ever read a serial. But then Kandi Steiner’s PSU seasons came along and changed my mind.

College-aged characters are my favorite to read about, and in this installment (Season 2, Episode 1) the author perfectly captures the complexity of this life stage by focusing on Greek life, friendships, family drama, and dating as her subject matter.

Narrated from multiple points of view, each character has his/her own unique voice. Each character is likeable; all are woven together in the most intriguing of ways. And, even though it’s a minor thing to notice and point out, I really liked the POV headings and the little palm trees used as dividers within each section.

It’s safe to say I’m hooked–both to the author’s style of writing and to the compelling narrative she’s crafted here.

Favorite quote–
Bear: “How many times have you had to rise?”
Shawna: “Enough times to know you never come back as the same person who went up in flames.”
